Updegraff Furniture, in business for more than a quarter century, started small, explains Kelly Updegraff Cole, who owns the stores with her brother,D.J.
“D.J. opened a used furniture store on Ninth Street about 27 years ago and gradually got into selling new furniture,” Kelly said. “His first new furniture store was on B Street, next to the hospital.”
Business was good, and as D.J.’s clientele increased, so did his inventory, making expansion into a larger location a necessity.
So, about 10 years ago, D.J. moved his business into a large, warehouse-like facility at 7881 West State Road 28. Since then, he partnered with his sister and opened two additional stores – one at Jackley and 28, almost directly across the road from their main store, and another a few doors up the street, next to the auto parts store. Most recently, Kelly and D.J. bought a third building, situated next to their main store. According to Kelly, they have some work to do before the new location will be ready for occupancy, but look for it to be open and full of furniture within the next few months.
“We have furniture everywhere,” she said. “It’s obvious when you walk in the door of any of our stores that we’re jammed with merchandise.”
Kelly and D.J. obtain their brand-name inventory from a variety of sources, primarily wholesale furniture marts, catalogs, from sales reps who frequently stop in, and they even fill special orders.
“We just buy, buy, buy!” Kelly said with a laugh.
Kelly and D.J. take pride in all aspects of their business, namely their fair prices, high-quality inventory, and excellent customer service. Consequently, Kelly said, they have earned the trust of a customer base that extends throughout Central Indiana – from Madison and all the surrounding counties, including Tipton, Howard, Delaware, Hamilton and Marion.
In addition to Kelly and D.J., Sheila Ball, who has worked for Updegraff’s for ten years, greets customers and tends to their home-furnishing needs. They invite you to stop by and say hello.
